Understanding the Conflict

Resolving the Russo-Ukrainian Conflict will require a division; yet other than in previous conflicts a vertical division will not suffice. The conflict in Ukraine is extremely complicated, with origins way deeper than the hot phase starting 2022, which dominated world headlines.

Most conflicts these days are settled through the conventional methods, like changing borders. But achieving real peace in Ukraine will require a different approach.

This conflict can perhaps necessitate what could be termed a “horizontal” solution, one that addresses the diverse interests and issues extant both at the surface and in the deeper, less apparent, subterranean dimensions of the conflict.

This case is particularly tricky because it weaves together so many different aspects of our national identity and personal experiences. Historical grievances that have been passed down through generations mix with questions about our cultural identity, which are at the heart of who we are and where we fit in the world.

Economic interests add another dimension to the conflict, while underlying psychological factors shape the perceptions of all involved regarding threats, opportunities, and potential courses of action. Understanding and addressing this complex web of interconnected factors is crucial for finding a meaningful solution to the Russo-Ukrainian conflict.
